For Universities

For the last seven years Nicholas Jeeves of Public has practiced as a visiting lecturer at a number of colleges, including University of Bedfordshire, Oakland College, Winchester School of Art and Baskent University Ankara.

He is currently lecturing at Cambridge School of Art (where he once studied) as well as enjoying an irregular post at the renowned Accademia di Comunicazione in Milan. He continues to provide one-off workshops and lectures by invitation, including the increasingly popular '10 Secrets for Graphic Designers' (see entry).

Public also works closely with D&AD, and having managed students' entries into the annual Student Awards for five years was invited in 2007 to join the D&AD Global Student Awards jury. This year he has acted as a casual consultant helping to develop a number of briefs.

Talking to young designers keeps us fresh, and we always enjoy the opportunity, wherever it takes us. If you are a student or tutor, and are interested in arranging a Public lecture or workshop, please email us at lectures@wearepublic.co.uk.

Lecture 01 Ten Secrets for Graphic Designers

One of Public’s most popular lectures is ‘Ten Secrets for Graphic Designers' which, if followed, enable direct transition from undergraduate to professional graphic designer - sometimes whilst still at college.

We firmly believe that all undergraduates have something to offer design. These ten simple, but critical steps allow students to discover early on what that might be, and how - according to what they are prepared to do - they might realise it.

Lecture 02 Ten Heroes for Graphic Designers

Whilst creative masters play a crucial role in inspiring and influencing all designers, Public has found a greater well of inspiration from people beyond the design community.

This lecture pairs short biographies of design heroes (Sister Corita, Bruno Munari, Jan Svankmeyer) with equally heroic non-designers, (original skateboarder Jay Adams, baseball player Manny Ramirez, and musician Jerry Lee Lewis). From 'Skate and Destroy' to 'Come Alive!' via 'Great Balls of Fire', Ten Heroes for Graphic Designers helps enable students to bring more influences to their work.

Lecture 03 I Didn’t Get Where I Am Today

Occasionally we are accused of success by students. This may be because Public has worked for, amongst others, Puma, Crown, Brylcreem, Fila, Blackberry and Ellesse.

We’re proud of all our clients, but often our most rewarding work has been for smaller brands, be they local entrepreneurs, small businesses or start-ups. And because these are the very clients that are most accessible to new designers, we encourage them to reject the idea that bigger is always better. We talk about the day-to-day ups and downs of working with brands of all sizes, including case studies and fees, and how success can be defined in any number of ways.
